The Italian Job |
I bought this game on the premise that it would be the sme style of mission based driving as Driver and Driver 2; but, sadly it doesnt quite live up to expectations. The game itself is good fun to play, and to anyone who grew up with The Italian Job every Christmas it is a great walk down memeory lane, but unfortunately it doesnt go much further than that. The missions dont seem to get any harder as you go through the game and in 3 days I had finished. The graphics and mechanics of the game leave a lot to be desired. If you cut a corner to tight it just lets you sail through the wall without a scratch. If you are looking for fun and a few memories rekindled then buy the game but if you are serious about your driving talents then head to Driver.

Not as Bad as the reviews say |
I really liked this game. It makes a change from listening to thumping monotone music and driving a sports car around a track half a dozen times.True, its not the best game in the world, but its does what it sets out to do, its fun! While I appreciate that the hardened gamers would find this too easy perhaps, there are some, like myself, who like to have a bit of a laugh and the Michael Caine voiceovers, not to mention the wonderful re-enacted scenes from the film all add to a game thats not to be taken too seriously. You drive just about every vehicle that featured in the film, including the coach, and have to complete various tasks before doing the job. Watch out for the police or mafia though. Throughout the game you listen to the theme music from the film itself, which because Im a fan anyway, I must admit didnt grate on my nerves unlike some other driving games music which I usually turn off after a couple of minutes! I have a friend who has no interest in the normal driving games, preferring footy, and yet sat down and actually played this for hours. Great fun.

Bloody good game, this |
The Italian Job is loads of fun. While Driver sets the bench-mark for this type of driving game, TIJ is not far behind. In TIJ you can see some of the elements that made Driver so cool; the nice cut-scenes, large environments, smooth scenery and the fact that you can bomb around towns in cool cars. But wouldnt you rather hear the (imitated) voice of Michael Caine shouting "Put ya foot dahn!" than some American squealing "Loose the tail, man!". Much better, thanks. The voices are hilarious and add to a colourful, humourous tone of the game. The graphics can be glitchy but theyre colourful and lovely to look at. Gameplay is fairly smooth; cars drive nicely around once you get the hang of them but can be intensely annoying at times (eg, when smashing into walls and ending up facing the wrong way - grrr). The sound is OK too; the music can go on a bit but, hey, you can turn it down. The menus and stuff are most annoying; long loading times and lots of stuff to press to get games saved and loaded. Shame. With persistence you can get it completed in one go, and it doesnt take too long. The Getaway level is surely one of the most fun, most exhiliarating, and at the same time, most fustrating levels in any PS game - excellent fun. And theres plenty more to do, with extra challenges and cars to use to drive around London and Turin as you progress through. Not really deserving of 5 stars, but not of 3 either. It gets 4 cos its so much fun.
